2020 March for Life in Salem

The 2020 Oregon March for Life will be held at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem on Saturday, January 25th at 2:30pm. Every year are fortunate to have a dedicated group of Orthodox Christians who have attended similar events in Portland, Oregon, and this year we hope to have a strong turnout for the March for Life at the State Capitol. We invite all Orthodox Christians and friends in the area to come and pray for all those who have died and all those who are suffering and have suffered under the current laws of our land. Please bring an icon or a sign and help us carry the Orthodox Christians for Life banners and join us in solidarity as we take a stand for the sanctity of life! For more information about this event, please visit the Oregon Right To Life website.

Orthodox Liturgical Singing Workshop, March 7

Orthodox Liturgical Singing Workshop
Saturday March 7, 2020 at Church of the Annunciation

Benedict & Maria Sheehan bring their uniquely complementary skill sets to a weekend workshop tailored to your choir’s needs and integrated into your church’s liturgical schedule. In intensive sessions they help church musicians of all abilities reach new levels of mastery, with emphasis on how to retain these skills and employ them in an everyday setting. They particularly emphasize the spiritual work of the sacred choral musician, and its connections to ensemble blend, musicianship, expressiveness, attentiveness, and a prayerful ethos.

For the singer

  • Develop and strengthen your individual voice
  • Maintain healthy technique in a choral setting
  • Increase your endurance and prevent vocal damage
  • Learn to warm-up and practice more effectively

For the conductor

  • Improve your conducting technique
  • Lead rehearsals in a more effective and engaging way
  • Deepen your knowledge of liturgical music
  • Diagnose and solve problems in your ensemble

For the choir

  • Convey sacred text with clarity and depth
  • Unify and develop your ensemble sound
  • Sing longer and stronger with less fatigue
  • Enhance ensemble “community” and connection

Parallel Love film premiere at Hollywood Theatre, July 22 at 7:30pm

We have the rare opportunity to attend the local premiere of The Covellite International Film Festival winning documentary, Parallel Love: The Story of a Band Called Luxury, about the Indie-Christian-Punk band, Luxury, and three of it’s members who became Orthodox Christian Priests. The film director, Matt Hinton, will be at the premiere and available for Q&A.

Tickets are available from the Hollywood Theater Website and you can also view the trailer.

You can listen to the recent NPR interview on the film here where you can also sample songs from the band’s latest album.

This premiere presents a unique and fun opportunity for the local Orthodox Christian community to turn out for an “extracurricular” activity.

Parallel Love asks a question you don’t hear very often: What happens to a rock-and-roll band when three-fifths of its members become Eastern Orthodox priests? That’s what Luxury, a band from Athens, Georgia, had to deal with after a devastating auto wreck they suffered on tour in 1995 while just on the cusp of success. Best described as The Smiths-meet-Fugazi, Luxury’s hyper-articulate musicians tell their poignant story—and play their soaring melodies on top of wild post-punk instrumentation—in this vibrant, gripping film. “I couldn’t take my eyes off it,” says Paste Magazine.
